Brian Cornell will step down as Target CEO after 11 years, with COO Michael Fiddelke succeeding him on February 1, 2026. Cornell will remain executive chairman and described Fiddelke as the "right candidate to lead our business back to growth". Target has experienced declining sales and reduced foot traffic following its January decision to end three-year DEI goals, eliminate minority hiring targets, close an executive racial-justice committee, and stop participating in external diversity surveys. The DEI rollback coincided with President Trump signing an executive order against DEI programmes and with conservative boycott campaigns targeting major brands.
