"a lot of progress has been made with Syria"
President Donald Trump hosted Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the White House, welcoming Syria into a U.S.-led coalition to fight the Islamic State. Al-Sharaa led rebel forces that toppled Bashar Assad last December and was named interim leader in January. The visit marked the first White House meeting with a Syrian head of state since 1946 and followed the easing of U.S. sanctions. Al-Sharaa previously had ties to al-Qaida and carried a $10 million U.S. bounty. U.S. officials said Syria’s entry will allow closer coordination with U.S. forces against ISIS alongside the new Syrian military and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. The U.N. Security Council voted to lift sanctions on the Syrian president and other officials prior to the visit.
