Sergeant Joel Daoust was charged with assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon following a January 3 traffic stop in Springfield. The incident began when Daoust pulled over a driver for speeding and marked lane violations. During the stop, he allegedly used physical force and deployed pepper spray against the driver. State Police acknowledged the agency escalated the incident and referred it to the District Attorney for review. Daoust was relieved of duty and suspended without pay. Prior disciplinary records show he received a counseling letter in 2015 for failing to record a search and forfeited seven days in 2017 for unsafe cruiser operation and disregarding a supervisor's order.
