The S.S. United States, once a prominent ocean liner that carried presidents and celebrities, is on its final voyage towards becoming the world's largest artificial reef. After decades spent rusting in Philadelphia, the 990-foot-long vessel left for Mobile, Alabama, where workers will remove hazardous materials before sinking the ship safely off the Florida Panhandle. Designed by William Francis Gibbs in the 1950s, the ship was the largest passenger liner built in America and broke trans-Atlantic speed records, but was ultimately retired in 1969 as air travel took precedence.
"The S.S. United States, the largest passenger ship ever built in America, is set to make its final journey, destined to become the world's largest artificial reef."
"Although supporters hoped for restoration, the ship is now bound for the ocean floor after decades of rusting in Philadelphia."
