The European Space Agency reported the discovery of an Einstein Ring surrounding the galaxy NGC 6505, located nearly 590 million light-years away. This phenomenon was unveiled by the Euclid space telescope during its mission to observe billions of galaxies. The ring, characterized by a central bright light and cloudy surround, had eluded previous telescopes due to the overwhelming light from the galaxy. Albert Einstein's theories on light bending predict this effect, which results from a precise alignment of objects in space. This remarkable find underscores the potential of cutting-edge space telescopes to uncover cosmic secrets.
Jacqueline McCleary, assistant professor of physics at Northeastern University says, “With other previous generations of telescope, this Einstein Ring was essentially drowned out by the light of this big galaxy.”
Mustapha Ishak, an astrophysics professor at the University of Texas at Dallas explains, "An Einstein Ring is a ring of light around a form of dark matter, galaxy or cluster of galaxies."
