Coach Brent Venables said medical experts recommended surgery as the best option for Mateer's short- and long-term future. Venables added that Mateer is disappointed but intends to pursue aggressive rehabilitation to return to play as quickly as possible. Mateer, an early Heisman Trophy favorite and a transfer from Washington State, is expected to return this season. Sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. will start the next game on Oct. 4 against Kent State.
