Leading up to the recent American elections, uncertainty grew among Ukrainians regarding the future of U.S. support amid fears of a second Trump presidency. Following a troubling meeting between President Zelensky and President Trump, many concluded that Trump had decisively aligned himself against Ukraine, intensifying fears of a prolonged conflict with stronger adversaries without American backing. In this context, support for Zelensky surged among Ukrainians who appreciated his stance against Trump, while the country recognized that it must now rely more on European allies for military assistance.
The once unthinkable fear that Ukraine would be forced to engage in a long war against a stronger opponent without U.S. support appeared to move exponentially closer to reality.
Ukrainians, including opposition politicians, were generally supportive of Mr. Zelensky for not bending to Mr. Trump despite tremendous pressure.
Many Ukrainians were moving toward a conclusion that seemed perfectly clear: Mr. Trump has chosen a side, and it is not Ukraine's.
Ukraine can now only count on European states for the support it needs to fight.
