During the Maha Kumbh festival in Prayagraj, India, a tragic stampede occurred as tens of thousands of Hindus rushed to take ritual baths, resulting in many injuries and potentially some fatalities. Authorities reported that between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., panic ensued as pilgrims attempted to jump barricades set for religious leaders' movement. Uttar Pradesh's chief minister stated that around 30 million had bathed by 8 a.m., pointing to the overwhelming crowd expected as the festival peaked with rituals at the sacred river confluence. Police struggled to manage the surging numbers of devotees, advising them to rethink their bathing locations.
Several pilgrims were injured, some seriously, in a stampede between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. as they tried to jump barricades erected for the movement of religious saints.
Adityanath urged people to instead take baths at other riverbanks, stating that the situation is now under control, but there is a massive crowd of pilgrims.
