Emmitt Martin III pleaded guilty to excessive force and aiding his fellow officers in the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols, a pivotal development in seeking accountability for police misconduct.
'Driven by anger, Emmitt Martin used excessive force on Tyre Nichols on January 7, 2023. Driven by fear, he tried to cover it up. Driven by conscience, in open court he accepted responsibility for what he did by pleading guilty,' said his attorney.
Nichols, 29, suffered fatal injuries after officers beat him during a traffic stop, with video evidence depicting graphic violence that led to public outcry and demand for accountability.
The family expressed relief over Martin's guilty plea, as attorneys emphasized the need for all involved officers to be held accountable while stating, 'This is another step toward justice.'
