The president of Lithuania visited a swampy area near the Belarus border where rescue crews are trying to recover a submerged U.S. Army vehicle with four missing soldiers. The M88 Hercules went missing during training exercises and was found in a muddy bog, complicating rescue efforts due to deep mud and water. President Gitanas Nauseda expressed hope for a miracle, despite the challenging circumstances, as searches continue for the soldiers from the First Brigade, Third Infantry Division, conducting exercises in eastern Lithuania.
I want to hope, President Gitanas Nauseda of Lithuania said during a visit to the site on Friday. I am still hoping for a miracle, he added.
Tracks in the ground indicated that the American vehicle had veered off a sandy path toward a small pond and then turned abruptly into a wooded area that ended up being a swamp.
The missing soldiers were from the First Brigade, Third Infantry Division, training near Pabrade, a city in eastern Lithuania near the border with Belarus.
Efforts to reach the vehicle have been hampered by deep mud and water from a nearby lake.
