On January 22, Todd Morris, a school bus driver in Jackson Township, Ohio, spotted smoke that he recognized as a sign of danger on his way home. Despite subzero temperatures and local school closures, he instinctively followed the smoke and discovered it was coming from the home of two children from his bus route. Concerned for their safety, Morris forced entry into the smoke-filled house, relying on his background as a retired police officer. He successfully rescued two terrified dogs before searching further for the children in the unsafe environment.
I recognized it as being not normal chimney smoke, and when I saw it was one of the students' homes, I knew I had to act.
I frequently refer to the kids on my bus as my kids, and I felt it was my duty to help them in their time of need.
