The ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz fetched a record-breaking $28 million at auction, which is the highest ever for entertainment memorabilia.
Heritage Auctions noted that the slippers were sold on behalf of collector Michael Shaw, and with added fees, the final sale reached $32.5 million.
Auction executive Joe Maddalena emphasized that there is 'no comparison' between Judy Garland's ruby slippers and other Hollywood memorabilia, highlighting their unique cultural significance.
The auction was lively with references to Wicked and The Wizard of Oz, showcasing the excitement as bidders raised amounts in increments that sometimes exceeded $800,000.
