Rising Democratic Star Enters Race to Fill Houston House Seat
Briefly

Christian Menefee, the Harris County Attorney, announced his candidacy for the vacant U.S. House seat in Texas’ 18th congressional district, which was left open by the recent passing of Representative Sylvester Turner. As the first candidate in a likely contentious race, Menefee aims to secure a seat in a heavily Democratic area known for its historic representation by prominent figures. He focuses on leveraging his experience in disputes against the Republican leadership, particularly regarding voting rights and government conduct under the Trump administration.
Mr. Menefee, 36, is the first candidate in what is likely to be a contested, nonpartisan race to fill the seat of Mr. Turner, who died just weeks after being sworn into office.
In an interview with The New York Times, Mr. Menefee said he hoped to draw on that experience if elected, describing himself as well prepared to fight the Trump administration.
Frankly, I don't like bullies. They're running the federal government in an incoherent, incompetent way that's impacting lives, and they're acting like bullies, he said.
The area was formerly represented by Barbara Jordan and Sheila Jackson Lee, both Democrats, and the Democrats are expected to hold onto the seat.
