John Beam died Friday, Nov. 14, after being shot the previous day on the Laney College campus, where he worked for the last 20 years. Loved ones described him as a larger-than-life personality who helped countless athletes turn their lives around and called him a "pillar" in the Oakland community. He coached football for over 40 years and became Laney College's athletic director last year. Beam gained broader recognition through Netflix's Last Chance U. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and granddaughters and was 66. A celebration of life will be held Saturday at the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts.
