Rayful Edmond, who played a pivotal role in the crack cocaine epidemic in Washington, D.C. during the 1980s and later cooperated with authorities, died at age 60.
At just 25 years old, Mr. Edmond was sentenced to life in prison, accused of managing one of the most powerful drug operations in D.C.- capable of distributing up to a third of the city's cocaine.
His drug empire reportedly moved 400 pounds of cocaine each week, generating an estimated $2 million, which financed Mr. Edmond's extravagant lifestyle.
Throughout his rise, Edmond was tied to high-profile figures, including Georgetown Hoyas basketball team members, leading Coach John Thompson to encourage him to keep players out of trouble.
