"May Turkey be a source of stability and rapprochement between peoples, in service of a just and lasting peace."
"Today, more than ever, we need people who will promote dialogue and practice it with firm will and patient resolve."
"third world war fought piecemeal,"
"We must not give into this! The future of humanity is at stake."
Pope Leo XIV opened his first foreign trip by arriving in Ankara and receiving a military guard of honor and a welcome from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He praised Turkey's historic role as a bridge between East and West and urged Turkey to be a source of stability and rapprochement between peoples in service of a just and lasting peace. He called for people who promote dialogue with firm will and patient resolve. Turkey has positioned itself as an intermediary in efforts to end the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, hosting talks and offering participation in a Gaza stabilization force. The pope warned that current wars amount to a "third world war fought piecemeal," criticized spending on armaments instead of fighting hunger, poverty and protecting creation, and said the future of humanity is at stake.
