"We have no indication that he was ever a client of United Healthcare, but he does make mention that it is the fifth largest corporation in America, which would make it the largest healthcare organization in America. So that's possibly why he targeted that company," said Kenny.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny indicated that investigators uncovered evidence suggesting Luigi Mangione had prior knowledge about UnitedHealthcare's annual investor conference taking place in New York City.
Mangione's lawyer, Thomas Dickey, stated that his client intends to plead not guilty, and he has yet to see evidence decisively linking Mangione to the crime.
Police reports detail that the shooter, Mangione, waited outside the hotel for Thompson, who was attending the investor conference, and shot him before fleeing on a bicycle.
