After 60 years, Audrey Backeberg, who disappeared in 1962 from Reedsburg, Wisconsin, has been located alive in another state. Sheriff's officials announced that her case was resolved through a review of cold files and new investigative methods. Detective Isaac Hanson played a key role by utilizing Ancestry.com data linked to Backeberg's sister, leading to a successful contact with her. Authorities confirmed that her vanishing was a personal choice, void of criminal circumstances, bringing closure to a long-standing mystery.
She said she last saw Audrey walking around the corner away from the bus stop. Audrey never returned home and has not been heard from again.
Sheriff Chip Meister said, 'Further investigation has revealed that Ms. Backeberg's disappearance was by her own choice and not the result of any criminal activity or foul play.'
Detective Isaac Hanson discovered Backeberg's sister had an Ancestry.com account, which led him to new data including a possible address.
Hanson said he promised Backeberg that he would keep their conversation and her whereabouts private, but said 'she had her reasons for leaving.'
The detective was able to resolve Backeberg's long-cold case as part of an ongoing examination of cold case files.
