Curtis Frank Lemons, a former assistant pastor at the New Progressive Christian Baptist Church in Oxnard, was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to stealing $200,000 from the church while its founder was on his deathbed. Between January and April 2021, Lemons misappropriated funds for personal expenses, including flights and property in Tennessee. The funds largely originated from the church founder, Rev. Jesse James Taylor, who passed away in August 2021. The church community was vulnerable during a difficult time, exacerbated by the pandemic.
