Paramount Skydance Corp. is poised to acquire the startup news outlet the Free Press and appoint its founder Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief of CBS News, where she will guide editorial direction across flagship programs. Weiss will report directly to Paramount CEO David Ellison. The acquisition was valued at about $150 million. Ellison oversees a media group including MTV, Nickelodeon and Paramount's film studio after taking over the company in August. Federal regulators approved the takeover after management agreed to ensure programming reflects diverse viewpoints and named an ombudsman to monitor bias complaints. Weiss formerly worked at the Wall Street Journal and New York Times and left the Times in July 2020 amid allegations of workplace hostility and claims of unlawful discrimination.
