Mohsen Mahdawi, a Columbia University graduate and immigration detainee, celebrated his graduation just weeks after being released from jail. Detained during a citizenship interview, he had been accused by the Trump administration of intimidation toward Jewish students during protests. Although he faced deportation threats due to his beliefs, Mahdawi delivered a powerful statement during graduation, asserting that the administration aimed to strip him of educational and celebratory experiences. His journey highlights the struggles faced by activists within the immigration system and the intersection of personal achievement and political conflict.
The Trump administration wanted to rob me of this opportunity. They wanted me to be in a prison, in prison clothes, to not have education and to not have joy or celebration.
It's very mixed emotions as I walk across this stage, celebrating my achievements while reflecting on the oppressive circumstances I've faced.
