Opinion: Pope Leo reminds us of the value of our shared humanity
The encyclical Magnifica Humanitas compares AI’s rapid rise to the Tower of Babel, where human hubris is punished. It welcomes AI advances in medicine, research, and education while calling for AI to be disarmed. It warns that job replacement threatens human purpose, stating that work is not merely an instrument and that profit-seeking cannot justify sacrificing jobs. It argues AI’s data and information do not equal lived understanding shaped by joy, loss, fear, accomplishment, and human connection. It adds that AI can imitate language and even simulate empathy, but lacks the affective, relational, and spiritual perspective needed for wisdom through choices, mistakes, forgiveness, and fidelity.
"“Artificial intelligence needs to be disarmed. The word is strong, I know, but deliberately chosen because this moment needs words capable of attracting attention, awakening consciences and indicating paths forward for humanity.”"
