On November 6, a researcher discovered an oarfish, measuring 9 to 10 feet long, on an Encinitas beach, marking the third sighting of this deep-sea creature in Southern California since August.
The oarfish usually dwell at depths of 300 to 3,000 feet and wash up when injured or disoriented; their presence might be linked to shifts in ocean conditions.
According to folklore, particularly in Japan, oarfish appearances are associated with bad omens, especially in predicting earthquakes, making their sightings of great interest to researchers.
Since August, there have been three oarfish sightings in California, after only 19 had been recorded throughout the state’s coastline since 1901, suggesting potential changes in population dynamics.
