Oakland: Man charged with killing mechanic in hit-and-run crash
Briefly

Samuel Grajales, 34, was charged with vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene, and felon-in-possession of a firearm linked to a May 17, 2023 crash. The victim, 50-year-old mechanic Carlos Smith, was reportedly riding a bicycle near 98th Avenue and D Street in East Oakland when Grajales allegedly hit him in a Volvo and drove off. Investigators located the Volvo outside a shop selling gold fronts the following day, recovered surveillance footage showing Grajales entering and exiting the car, and arrested him June 28, 2023 while he drove the vehicle with stolen plates; police found a gun inside. Charges were filed more than two years after his arrest; a judge set bail at $80,000 and court records show he has since been released. Prior robbery convictions in 2008 and 2011 and a 2017 weapon-in-jail conviction prohibited him from possessing a firearm.

He was arrested June 28, 2023, allegedly while driving the same Volvo, which was equipped with stolen plates. Police say a gun was found in the car. Grajales was charged Aug. 5. At an Aug. 18 court hearing, Alameda County Judge Michael Risher set his bail at $80,000. Grajales has since been released from jail, court records show.
