A University of Pittsburgh student, Sudiksha Konanki, was reported missing during a trip to the Dominican Republic and is presumed to have drowned. She was part of a group of six students in Punta Cana. After a night out, most of the friends returned to their hotel, but Konanki remained on the beach with another male companion. They decided to swim and were reportedly caught by a large wave, which led to her disappearance. Investigators and authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding the event, with the male companion cooperating but not exonerated.
Most of the group went back to the hotel at approximately 5:55 a.m. But one man stayed with her on the beach, according to a Dominican Republic investigative police report.
Three Dominican officials involved in the investigation told ABC News that Konanki was walking on the beach with six people on March 5, after spending time at a nightclub.
