A tentative agreement has ended a rail strike in New Jersey that had significant implications for the state's transit system and New York City commutes. After three days of picketing, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen reached a deal with NJ Transit, which entails raising wages for locomotive engineers and trainees. The strike was the first in New Jersey since 1983 and arose after a previous March agreement was overwhelmingly rejected. Governor Phil Murphy praised the negotiations for balancing fairness for employees and affordability for commuters.
The only real issue was wages and we were able to reach an agreement that boosts hourly pay beyond the proposal rejected by our members last month.
They have poured hour after countless hour into reaching an agreement that is both fair to NJ Transit's employees while also being affordable for our state's commuters and taxpayers.
