""awarded substantial observation time as a principal investigator on the Hubble Space Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope, and his research has earned him numerous accolades including a NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal.""
Carl Grillmair, a 67-year-old Caltech research scientist, was found dead on his front porch in Llano after a 6:10 a.m. 911 call and pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the torso. Authorities arrested 29-year-old Freddy Snyder and charged him with murder, a nearby carjacking, and first-degree burglary from a separate December 28 incident; bail was set at $2 million. Grillmair specialized in galactic astronomy, dark matter, stellar populations and exoplanets, received significant telescope observation time and a NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal, and was remembered as a mentor and close friend.
