More than 100 patients evacuated after Rockland nursing home fire
""The staff has been extremely cooperative, and they're probably really the true heroes, moving patients before we even got here.""
""The staff was incredibly responsive, working on removing the patients to safe areas, to the stairwells, getting them out of the smoke," Duffey said."
""It's moving patients that are bedridden, that are elderly, a little bit less mobile than your younger population," Duffey said. "They did need assistance coming down, mostly carrying them to the second floor, into the first floor, where they would be safe from the smoke.""
An afternoon three-alarm fire erupted on the third floor of Webster Park Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center on Webster Street, producing very heavy smoke. The facility's sprinkler system largely contained the flames while staff initiated evacuation of 102 patients, including 22 from the third floor, before firefighters arrived. Multiple local departments responded and assisted with transporting patients; no patients or fire personnel were injured. Bedridden and less mobile residents required carrying to lower floors and ambulance teams relocated residents Saturday night. Water damage will keep the facility closed for some time. The fire originated near the nurses' station and is under investigation.
