Minority Groups' Uninsured Rate Has Plunged in Recent Years, Reports Find
Briefly

Uninsured rates among Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Native Americans significantly decreased between 2010 and 2022, largely attributed to the Affordable Care Act providing health coverage through marketplaces, Medicaid, and employer plans.
The uninsured rate among Black Americans decreased from 21% to under 11%, Hispanic Americans from almost 33% to 18%, Asian Americans from nearly 17% to over 6%, and Native Americans from over 32% to roughly 20%.
The Affordable Care Act, signed by President Obama in 2010, narrowed the gap in uninsured rates between ethnic groups, with the uninsured rate among Black Americans reducing from almost eight percentage points higher than white Americans to just four percentage points higher by 2022.
Federal subsidies, expanded during the pandemic in 2021 and extended through 2025, played a key role in the increased coverage, with marketplace enrollment for Black and Hispanic Americans doubling between 2020 and 2023.
