President Trump's new senior advisor for Africa, Boulos, begins his inaugural trip in the Great Lakes region, focusing on enhancing U.S. investment in the DRC's mining industry amidst ongoing regional conflicts. Meeting with Congolese President Tshisekedi, Boulos addressed a potential minerals-for-security agreement that promises mutual benefits for both nations. As conflicts with M23 rebels escalate, Boulos emphasized the importance of long-term peace and stability while seeking to foster a closer relationship between the United States and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which he describes as a priority during his visit.
The Congolese army is battling M23 rebels in the country's east. This year the rebels have made significant gains, including taking control of several key territories.
We've reviewed the DRC's proposal, and I'm pleased to announce that the President and I have agreed on a path forward for its development.
I look forward to working with President Felix Tshisekedi and his team to build a deeper relationship that benefits the Congolese and American people.
We want a lasting peace that affirms the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the DRC.
