The attacker then opened fire with an assault rifle, firing several rounds at individuals inside the church, Grand Blanc Township police chief William Renye said at a news conference. He added that the suspect is also believed to have set a fire that quickly grew into a large blaze."

Officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect and killed him eight minutes after police received the initial call. The FBI is leading the investigation and local media reported three IEDs were found in the suspect's vehicle. Police may still find victims inside the burned building.
