Meta wins historic antitrust case and won't have to spin off WhatsApp, Instagram
""The Federal Trade Commission \"continues to insist that Meta competes with the same old rivals it has for the last decade, that the company holds a monopoly among that small set, and that it maintained that monopoly through anticompetitive acquisitions,\" Boasberg wrote in his ruling. \"Whether or not Meta enjoyed monopoly power in the past, though, the agency must show that it continues to hold such power now. The Court's verdict today determines that the FTC has not done so.\""
""expressed in 2008: 'It is better to buy than compete.' True to that maxim, Facebook has systematically tracked potential rivals and acquired companies that it viewed as serious competitive threats.""
A federal judge ruled that Meta does not hold a monopoly in social networking, rejecting a potential remedy that could have forced divestitures of Instagram and WhatsApp. The decision concluded a historic antitrust trial that wrapped up in late May and came after separate rulings that found Google an illegal monopoly in search and online advertising. The FTC argued that Meta maintained monopoly power by pursuing CEO Mark Zuckerberg's 2008 maxim, 'It is better to buy than compete,' acquiring and neutralizing potential rivals. Zuckerberg testified and sought to downplay decade-old emails, saying early-stage notes did not reflect the full scope of his interest. The court found the FTC did not demonstrate ongoing monopoly power.
