"The 24-year-old Naumov finished his Winter Games debut with an emotional free skate Friday night, just over a year after Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov were among 67 people killed when American Airlines Flight 5342 crashed into a military helicopter on approach to Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, D.C., and fell into the dark depths of the Potomac River."
"His students from Tomorrow's Champions, the youth academy based at the Skating Club of Boston that was founded by his parents and Naumov now runs, were proud. Some of them were sitting just above the kiss-and-cry area, waving a homemade sign with red and blue lettering that read, "Let's Go Coach Max!" "Hey, what's up, guys!?" Naumov said upon seeing them, smiling and waving."
Maxim Naumov finished his Winter Games debut with an emotional free skate a little over a year after his parents, Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, died when American Airlines Flight 5342 collided with a military helicopter near Ronald Reagan National Airport and plunged into the Potomac. The program was imperfect: Naumov fell twice on quad salchows and skated unevenly. The crowd at the Milano Ice Skating Arena rose to give him a standing ovation as teammate Ilia Malinin pursued gold. His students from Tomorrow's Champions displayed a homemade sign, and Naumov skated to "In This Shirt," a mournful ballad about heartbreak and loss.
