Map Shows Deadly Tornadoes Down South as Homeowners Scramble To File Claims
Briefly

A recent weekend witnessed catastrophic weather events across the Midwest and South, including deadly tornadoes, thunderstorms, and wildfires that left at least 40 people dead and devastated numerous homes and businesses. At least 52 tornadoes were reported in seven states, hard-hitting areas such as Missouri, where 12 fatalities occurred. The most powerful tornado, an EF-4, struck Jackson County, AR. Local officials and agencies are warning about potential contractor fraud targeting affected homeowners in the aftermath of this destruction.
Coroner Jim Akers, of Butler County, MO, described the home where one man was killed as "just a debris field." "The floor was upside down," he told the Associated Press. "We were walking on walls."
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said that one tornado, given the rating of EF-2, touched down in Tylertown, MS, wiping out entire neighborhoods. Six people were killed, 29 were injured, and more than 200 were left homeless.
