"Demetric Scott wrote letters under Reyes' name threatening to blow up the White House just like 911 in New York. Scott wrote in one of his bogus letters, 'I am not scared of the Trump Administration' and 'We are tired of this president messing with us Mexicans.' He continued, 'I will self deport myself back to Mexico but not before I shoot your precious president,' all in an attempt to frame Reyes and prevent him from testifying."
"Prosecutors said Scott believed his fake letters would help him evade conviction in his case involving Reyes, who DHS officials said is in the U.S. illegally. Scott thought Reyes would not be able to testify against him if he was deported. He wrote the fake letters while in jail in 2025 and had family members send them for him, and ICE agents arrested Reyes shortly afterwards."
"Scott's plan backfired when Milwaukee cops immediately determined Reyes did not write the letters. Reyes could not read or write in English, and had very different handwriting. Still, Noem and the DHS put out a press release in May 2025 celebrating the capture of Reyes; the announcement said Reyes had threatened to assassinate Trump, but investigators were already looking at whether Reyes had been set up."
Demetric Scott, a 52-year-old Milwaukee resident, orchestrated a scheme to frame Ramon Morales Reyes, an undocumented immigrant, by writing threatening letters to President Trump and ICE under Reyes' name. Scott's motivation was to prevent Reyes from testifying against him in a 2023 stabbing and bike theft case. Writing from jail in 2025, Scott composed letters threatening to assassinate the president and used family members to mail them. The letters falsely claimed to be from Reyes and expressed anti-Trump sentiments. ICE arrested Reyes following the threats, and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem initially publicized the arrest. However, Milwaukee police quickly determined Reyes could not have written the letters due to his inability to read or write English and his distinctly different handwriting. Scott was convicted and sentenced to 16.5 years in prison for his fraudulent scheme.
