Man sentenced to 11 years to life for attempted murder in 1989 assault on San Mateo woman
"It's a spectacular feeling, and we're so happy for this victim,"
"This victim, throughout those 36 years, always kept in contact with the police. She's one of the strongest victims we've ever encountered, and she always made sure we were still paying attention."
"She is stronger than her rapist, and so we were very pleased and proud that we were able to bring justice to her."
John Harris Jr., a 59-year-old Manteca resident, was sentenced to 11 years to life for raping a San Mateo woman in 1989 and slitting her throat from ear to ear. DNA from the crime scene was matched to DNA on an envelope Harris licked and sealed, ending more than 30 years at large. Harris pleaded no contest to attempted murder with enhancements for premeditation, knife use, and great bodily injury, and to aggravated mayhem with knife enhancements, admitting serious violent felony allegations. The victim requested the maximum sentence, which the court imposed.
