"Now they're trying to arrest me simply because I do not believe in gay rights and abortion. I had the cops called on me. A SWAT team showed up, and I'm now engaged in a shootout. My state has been the number one abortion and gay rights state in the entire country and I've been segregated against for my beliefs."
"I assure you that I am not the aggressor here. They tried to arrest me, they tried to engage me in a shootout. I'm defending myself and my daughter from what I believe is government persecution based on my political and religious beliefs."
Steven Righini, a 29-year-old farmer and Trump supporter, barricaded himself in his Portage Lake, Maine home during a Monday shootout with state troopers while holding his four-week-old daughter. Troopers arrived after reports of a domestic dispute involving the child's 18-year-old mother. When officers attempted to arrest Righini, he drew a gun and fired at them, injuring Deputy Shane Campbell in the shoulder and killing a police dog named Preacher. During the hours-long standoff, Righini posted social media messages claiming he was being persecuted for his anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-abortion views. He stated authorities were arresting him solely because he did not support gay rights and abortion. Righini maintained he was not the aggressor. State troopers ultimately shot and killed him.
