LIRR bathroom stowaways a stubborn problem amid fare evasion crackdown
""I'm paying several hundred dollars a month for a monthly ticket, and this guy has never paid," said Greenberg, of Coram. "That's thousands of dollars a year.""
""As long as the LIRR collects fares by having conductors walk trains to check tickets, some riders will try to avoid paying, said Lisa Daglian, executive director of the Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA, who believes bathroom fare skippers are a particularly determined bunch.""
""You have to have a very strong stomach to do that," Daglian said."
Commuters sometimes hide in Long Island Rail Road train bathrooms to avoid paying fares, boarding and remaining inside until ticket collectors pass. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has tightened enforcement by charging for late e-ticket activation, shortening ticket validity, and using police to remove nonpaying riders. LIRR crews generally will not enter locked bathrooms unless there is a medical emergency, but can summon police to force removal. Rider advocates say affordability measures for low-income customers could reduce the incentive to skip fares. As long as conductors walk trains to check tickets, determined passengers will attempt bathroom stowaway tactics.
