Berkeley, a city known for its compassion toward homelessness, has begun to tighten its enforcement on homeless camps, reflecting growing frustration among residents and officials.
"People are frustrated even in this very progressive city that cares deeply about addressing homelessness," said Mayor Jesse Arreguin, highlighting a growing urgency in tackling encampment issues.
Since a recent Supreme Court ruling, more than 75 cities, especially in California, have imposed new restrictions on homeless encampments, signifying a significant policy shift.
Eric Tars, legal director of the National Homelessness Law Center, noted that about a third of new measures targeting homeless encampments have been enacted in California.
