Kilmar Abrego Garcia was wrongfully deported in March to a notorious prison in El Salvador and returned to the United States in June. Federal immigration authorities detained him in Baltimore to pursue renewed efforts to deport him after a brief period of freedom. His attorneys filed a lawsuit seeking to halt removal until his protection claim is heard, arguing that the United States could place him in a country where "his safety cannot be assured." The lawsuit prompted a blanket court order pausing deportations for two days for Maryland immigrants challenging detention. About 200 supporters gathered and prayed outside the Baltimore ICE field office.
