Rümeysa Ãztürk, a PhD student at Tufts University, has faced deteriorating health conditions and constitutional rights violations during her six-week detention in Louisiana by ICE. A federal judge ordered her release after significant testimony regarding her asthma, which worsened while she was confined. Judge William K. Sessions III determined that Ãztürk does not pose a danger or risk of flight, allowing her to return to Massachusetts under supervision. Ãztürk is a former Fulbright scholar from Turkey, currently studying Child Development.
"For 45 days, Rümeysa has been detained in Louisiana - over 1,300 miles from her friends, her community, and her lawyers. During that time, she has suffered regular and escalating asthma attacks. And at the same time, the government has failed to produce any justification for her detention."
"We are so relieved that Rümeysa will soon be back in Massachusetts, and won't stop fighting until she is free for good."
