A federal judge in Tennessee has ordered Kilmar Abrego Garcia to be released from prison awaiting trial for human smuggling charges. The judge declined the government's request to keep him incarcerated, instead implementing conditions for his release, including travel restrictions and mandated counseling. Garcia's wife had previously filed protective orders but has since rescinded them, expressing a desire for their family to reunite. The charges against him relate to accusations of transporting thousands of undocumented migrants across the U.S. since 2016, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
The judge determined that Abrego Garcia would only be able to travel between his home state of Maryland and parts of Tennessee, where his trial is being held.
Prosecutors talked about protective orders that Abrego Garcia's wife had filed. She's since rescinded them, and she just wants to see him home.
The federal prosecutors charged him with human smuggling, claiming he transported thousands of migrants without legal status across the U.S. since 2016.
