"Words cannot begin to describe the loss and devastation my family feels, I am in utter shock and disbelief the government has punished my father for simply doing his life's work of journalism. He is the reason our home feels like home, it was my dad who centered me, who drove me to my medical appointments, and who lifted me up."
"Mario and his family are being punished for his reporting. This cruelty is meant to stifle our free press."
Mario Guevara, an Emmy-winning journalist who fled El Salvador in 2004, was deported to El Salvador after authorities cited his filming of law enforcement activities as a reason for retaliation. The Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals denied an emergency request to block the Board of Immigration Appeals' deportation order; the three immigration appeals board judges were appointed by Attorney General Pam Bondi under President Trump. The Committee to Protect Journalists characterized the deportation as retaliation. The ACLU called the action punishment intended to stifle the press. Guevara won numerous awards, was featured in a 2019 New York Times documentary, and founded a news organization in 2024. He was arrested in June while reporting at a "No Kings" protest.
