The church - with its gothic arches, 58-foot ceilings and angels hidden in the woodwork - became an integral, though often overlooked, part of Jimmy Carter's time in the nation's capital.
He was a wonderful volunteer bible teacher who happened to be President of the United States,” said Christi Harlan, a member of the congregation and author of two books on Carter's time at First Baptist.
While president, he attended Sunday services at First Baptist more than 70 times, according to archival records. He opted for a pew a few rows from the front.
To commemorate Carter, the church is holding a prayer service in Carter's memory on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 6 p.m.
