Jannik Sinner began his U.S. Open title defense with a 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Vit Kopriva, finishing in 1 hour, 39 minutes. Sinner had withdrawn from the Cincinnati final and the U.S. Open mixed doubles because of illness but used the tournament's new Sunday start and spread-out opening schedule to recover. The top seed had won 26 consecutive hard-court matches before the Cincinnati final. Sinner captured the U.S. Open last year and added the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year. Sinner aims to reach the final at all four Grand Slams in the same year.
Obviously very happy that I'm healthy again, that we did our best to be in the best possible shape here,
"Amazing memories," Sinner said of returning to New York. "Obviously every year is different. You come here starting this tournament hopefully the best possible way, which I did."
