The most recent hike to the federal minimum wage was in 2009, staying at $7.25 for 15 years, the longest period without an increase since 1938.

Around 869,000 U.S. workers earned the federal minimum wage or less in 2023, with exceptions for tipped employees, some workers with disabilities, and students.
