Island Cellular LLC received almost $332 million, the largest provisional BEAD award in Washington, with Northwest Open Access Network receiving almost $130.6 million. The public comment period on the provisional awards opens today and closes at 5 p.m. Pacific on September 1. Investment by technology is concentrated in fiber (48.1%) and licensed terrestrial fixed wireless (38.6%), with smaller shares for licensed by-rule fixed wireless, non-geostationary satellite, and unlicensed fixed wireless. Island Cellular provides fixed wireless access through its Emerge Technologies brand. The investments aim to expand high-speed internet access and associated economic, educational, and health-care opportunities statewide.
The press release issued by Washington about its provisional awards listed the percentage of the total BEAD investment by technology type: 48.1% fiber, 38.6% licensed terrestrial fixed wireless, 8.3% licensed by-rule terrestrial fixed wireless, 6.2% non-geostationary satellite, and 0.6% unlicensed terrestrial fixed wireless.
