International regulators probe how DeepSeek is using data. Is the app safe to use?
Briefly

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company, has recently gained attention for providing a competitive chatbot akin to ChatGPT at a lower cost. However, this has triggered warnings from regulators in Europe and the United States regarding user data privacy. The Italian government has already blocked the app due to investigations on data collection practices. Concerns have emerged about the vast amount of user data being harvested, leading to calls for stronger regulations and oversight to protect consumer privacy and national security, particularly against potential threats posed by Chinese tech firms.
"Data security concerns are always a critical issue when using AI chatbots, and this is not unique to DeepSeek," said Angela Zhang, a law professor at USC.
According to DeepSeek's privacy policy, the service collects a trove of user data, including chat and search query history, device information, and IP addresses.
