Illinois officials blast Trump's threat to deploy National Guard in Chicago
Briefly

President Trump suggested sending National Guard troops to Chicago and other U.S. cities to combat crime. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson condemned the proposal as "uncoordinated, uncalled for, and unsound," warning that unlawfully deploying troops could inflame tensions between residents and law enforcement. Mayor Johnson said the city does not need a military occupation and called the move a violation of the Constitution while pledging vigilance to protect democracy and humanity. City data cited by Johnson show declines in several violent crimes over the past year. Trump previously deployed Guard members to Washington, D.C., and signaled potential deployments elsewhere, including Baltimore.
Mayor Brandon Johnson, a Democrat, said in a statement on Friday that Trump's approach was "uncoordinated, uncalled for, and unsound" and that "unlawfully deploying" the National Guard to Chicago could "inflame tensions between residents and law enforcement."
Speaking on MSNBC on Sunday, Johnson added: "The city of Chicago does not need a military occupation... This is clearly a violation of the Constitution, and we're going to remain firm and vigilant in our commitment to ensure that our democracy is protected and our humanity is secured."
"Chicago's a mess. You have an incompetent mayor, grossly incompetent. And we'll straighten that one out probably next,"
