"Our understanding at this time is that the federal agents made misrepresentations to gain entry to the building to search for a 'missing person.' We are working to gather more details. She said they were providing legal support for the student."
"ICE agents impersonated NYPD with fake badges and a phony missing persons bulletin for a 5 year old girl. They purposefully deceived campus housing/security to gain entry to the student's apartment. The level of civil rights violations that took place is staggering."
"It is important to reiterate that all law enforcement agents must have a judicial warrant or judicial subpoena to access non-public areas of the University, including housing, classrooms, and areas requiring CUID swipe access. An administrative warrant is not sufficient."
Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents entered Columbia University housing early Thursday morning and detained student Elmina Aghayeva from Azerbaijan by misrepresenting their identities and reason for entry. The agents impersonated NYPD officers and used a false missing persons bulletin to gain access to the building. Aghayeva's student visa was terminated in 2016 for failing to attend classes. Columbia University's acting president condemned the civil rights violations and emphasized that law enforcement requires judicial warrants to access university housing and non-public areas. Administrative warrants are insufficient. The university advised students to request officers wait while contacting campus public safety before granting entry.
